Message from the Interim Chair

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) at the University of Toronto, is a community of scientists and physicians who play a central role within the Faculty of Medicine. We are a “full service” department driven by our mission to create and convey knowledge about the causes and mechanisms of disease so that our discoveries and our educational programs impact health care provincially, nationally and globally. To accomplish this, we work closely with our collaborating teaching hospitals and research institutes.

Practice Informing Research: Our clinical practice identifies the gaps in our knowledge of disease and thus informs our research strategies.  “Laboratory Medicine,” characterized by laboratory-based testing of specimens, contributes to about 70 per cent of all clinical decisions made by health practitioners and represents approximately 85 per cent of all objective data in an individual’s health record. “Pathobiology” refers to our research-intensive mission which focuses on studying the causes and mechanisms of disease. Taken together, LMP is a powerful catalyst for translating new knowledge into improved health for our communities.

Success: Our faculty members are accomplished leaders in scientific and clinical advancement, innovators who push boundaries and create new paradigms. In North America, LMP ranks third in the number of peer-reviewed research publications amongst similar departments. In addition, our graduate students and trainees receive competitive prestigious awards at an exceptionally high rate. Year after year, students and faculty achieve and maintain the highest standard of performance in our discipline.

Partnerships: Our strong partnerships with affiliated hospitals, institutes and agencies in Toronto and around the globe provide access to outstanding collaborators, case material and leading-edge technologies. These benefit all our training programs.

Education: LMP offers relevant and challenging education and training programs in all spheres, including at the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, fellowship and continuing professional development level. Our students benefit from our engaging student-run organizations and our alumni pursue satisfying careers around the world. LMP provides an exceptional educational experience leading to boundless opportunity.

Moving forward: LMP continues to advance its academic mission within a culture of innovation and excellence as its faculty and students work on important problems in biomedical science.
