LMP Faculty Promotion 2017

We are pleased to congratulate the eight faculty members in LMP who received approval for promotion effective July 1, 2017.  These highly respected individuals are being recognized by their local, national and international peers for their excellent accomplishments in scholarship, teaching and academic patient care.

 

 

 

 

Faculty promoted to the rank of Professor

 

 

 

 

David Hwang, University Health Network, is internationally recognized for his excellent academic activities in pulmonary pathology.  He is well regarded by the international and national community in lung pathology for his expertise in lung transplantation, cancer and infections.  Since 2010, he has made important contributions that have advanced pulmonary pathology, contributed to improvements in standards of lung cancer reporting and increased our understanding of microbial populations in chronic lung infections.

 

 

 

 

 

Chen Wang, Mount Sinai Hospital, is internationally recognized for his excellent scholarly activities that improved laboratory diagnostics of lymphocytic neoplasms as well as professional innovations in hematopathology.   His work has been adapted in international guidelines and have resulted in invitations to lead international projects on cell neoplasms, blood cell analysis and microfluidics.

 

 

Faculty promoted to the rank of Associate Professor

Brendan Dickson, Mount Sinai Hospital, has become an outstanding bone and soft tissue clinician-investigator whose impact spans the full extent of this demanding area of pathology.  He is widely known across Canada for his significant and innovative contributions that changed important elements in bone and soft tissue diagnosis and thus the management of these conditions.  In addition, Dr. Dickson has utilized his clinical expertise to effectively promote education in his subspecialty and to carry out useful research in collaboration with his orthopaedic and pathology colleagues.

 

Lili-Naz Hazrati, Hospital for Sick Children, is nationally recognized as a clinician-scientist in the neuroscience community with impact on the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. She has successfully used novel animal models and human autopsy tissue to increase our understanding of basic mechanisms of molecular and cellular function in neurodegenerative diseases especially in the role of inflammation in pathogenesis of these conditions.  More recently she has lead neuropathological investigations into the effects of concussion and brain trauma in professional and amateur athletes.

 

Vladimir Iakovlev, St. Michael’s Hospital, is an internationally recognized expert in the response of host tissue to implantable synthetic meshes.  He developed methodologies for investigating the underlying etiology of mesh complications by utilizing image analysis of tissues associated with removed meshes as well as evaluating the damaged mesh polymers, and identified novel patterns of nerve growth and mesh deterioration as the major causes of these complications. His novel and important academic contributions to this difficult and controversial field has increased our understanding of the pathophysiology of meshes implanted in the human body.  His pivotal findings, using evidence-based research, are changing medical practice and influencing government health regulations.

 

Julia Keith, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, is nationally known for promoting excellence in neuropathology as an academic discipline.  She has successfully implemented a transformative roadmap in neuropathology education that enriched student-learning outcomes across the country.  Her initiatives did not only offer new tools for learning but improved residency and CME program delivery and effectiveness.  In addition, her sustained output in clinical and translational research has improved practice.

 

Katerina Pavenski, St. Michael’s Hospital, is recognized as a national and emerging international expert in Transfusion Medicine.  She has excelled in her academic and scholarly activities through the development of provincial and national guidelines on blood management which have had substantial impact on patient management in this critical area of laboratory medicine and hematology.  Her exemplary professional practice has led to improvements in Transfusion Medicine through leadership roles at the provincial, national and international level.

 

Mary Shago, Hospital for Sick Children, is an influential academic in Canada’s cytogenetics community.  Her notable scholarly accomplishments include advancing cytogenetic diagnosis in pediatric oncology, building a sustainable training environment in cytogenetics and improving quality assurance in the field through her various leadership roles.
