Speaker: Kelsie Thu

Dr. Kelsie Thu is a Staff Scientist at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology Department.

Her academic training included doctoral studies with Dr. Wan Lam at the BC Cancer Research Centre in Vancouver where she used tumour genomics to discover genetic mechanisms promoting lung cancer biology. Kelsie conducted her postdoctoral fellowship at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto with Dr. Tak Mak where she developed a CRISPR/Cas9 functional genomics platform to identify drug resistance mechanisms in cancer models.

Now leading her own laboratory, Kelsie’s career goal is to make discoveries that lead to improved outcomes for lung cancer patients. Her research program focuses on identifying molecular mechanisms governing lung cancer biology and therapy response. Her research integrates tumour genomics and CRISPR/Cas9 genetic screens to drive biological discovery in cell and animal models of lung cancer. Using this approach, Kelsie aims to discover new therapeutic approaches for lung cancer, including strategies to circumvent drug resistance and enhance the efficacy of current treatments to increase lung cancer survival rates.
