Each year, National Medical Laboratory Week recognizes the essential role that laboratory medicine professionals play in health care. From diagnosing disease to guiding treatment decisions, laboratory medicine underpins nearly every aspect of patient care, often behind the scenes, but always at the centre of clinical decision-making.

At the University of Toronto’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP), this week is an opportunity to highlight the breadth and impact of work taking place across the department. Faculty, staff and learners contribute to advances in research, education and clinical practice that improve health outcomes locally and globally.

Today, we also mark Pathologists’ Assistant Day, highlighting a vital and often under-recognized profession within the laboratory medicine team. Pathologists’ Assistants are integral to the diagnostic process, working behind the scenes to ensure accuracy, efficiency and excellence in patient care.

To showcase this important work, we are pleased to share two new videos:

  • A behind-the-scenes look at a surgical pathology sample as it moves through the lab at Mount Sinai Hospital from arrival to diagnosis
  • A feature on our Pathologists’ Assistant faculty and students in the MHSc in Laboratory Medicine program

We encourage you to watch, like and share these videos on Instagram and LinkedIn to help raise awareness of the critical work happening across laboratory medicine.

Thank you to all members of our community for your dedication and contributions.
