The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine is pleased to congratulate Dr. Scott Yuzwa on achieving tenure at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Yuzwa completed his PhD in Molecular Biochemistry and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University before undertaking postdoctoral training at The Hospital for Sick Children. He is now an Associate Professor within LMP at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and a member of the department’s research community based on the sixth floor of the Medical Sciences Building (MSB). Since joining LMP in 2019, he has built an innovative research program focused on developmental neurobiology, neural stem cells and brain repair, while also making significant contributions to graduate and undergraduate education in the department.
Dr. Yuzwa’s research combines neurobiology, single-cell genomics and bioinformatics to better understand the mechanisms underlying cell genesis in the neonatal brain and the impacts of brain injury and disease on these processes. His laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate neural stem cell behaviour in the brain, with the long-term goal of informing new therapeutic approaches for neurological injury and disease.
His work has already attracted national recognition and competitive funding support, including a five-year Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant supporting research into how dormant neural stem cells are regulated and how they may be activated to aid recovery following stroke.
Alongside his research program, Dr. Yuzwa plays an important role in teaching and mentorship within LMP. He contributes to both graduate and undergraduate education and is committed to training the next generation of scientists and clinician-scientists. He is a role model for early career scientists.
Tenure is one of the University’s highest academic distinctions and recognizes sustained excellence and impact in research, teaching and service. LMP Department Chair, Dr. Rita Kandel commented, “Scott exemplifies that excellence and this appointment and promotion is well deserved. I am confident, given what he has accomplished thus far, that Scott will make many more contributions to advancing knowledge in the coming years.”
