Pathologists don’t see patients: AI will replace lab medicine experts: and are they even real doctors?
These are just a few of the myths Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) faculty and trainees busted as part of a social media campaign. The initiative helped mark Medical Laboratory Week and gave LMP community members a platform to address some of the most common misconceptions about this varied, and sometimes poorly understood field.
Many people may have limited opportunities to learn about or interact with individuals in this field of medicine. And some may form opinions based on popular culture portrayals that emphasize cliches and stereotypes, like doctors struggling with (or even harming) patients and getting moved to pathology as a result as shown in TV shows like Scrubs or The Good Doctor.
In reality, Laboratory Medicine is diverse, dynamic and essential and informs and influences almost every aspect of clinical care.
We put some of our faculty and trainees in pathology and microbiology on the spot this Medical Laboratory Week, to bust some of the myths. Enjoy our myth-busting campaign!
