Clinician Investigator Program (CIP)

You must:

• be a current Postgraduate trainee in a laboratory medicine residency training program at the University of Toronto
• enroll in the University of Toronto Clinician Investigator Program (CIP), see below for application process
• demonstrate sustained excellence throughout your clinical residency training.
• have a clear understanding of research training paths and the requirements for acquiring appropriate skills for a future career in research. Previous research experience is desirable but not a requirement
• have strong support from your residency training Program Director. 
• enroll in a graduate program for a minimum of two years within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and successfully complete an MSc (two years) or PhD (four years) degree, if you don't have a graduate degree.

If you have a PhD degree, you may enter a two-year research program as a postdoctoral fellow. 

All research supervisors must be faculty members of the School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto and must have appointments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. 

For the first two years of research training

You will receive funding towards salary and/or tuition.

Salary funding will be dependant on your PGY classification and will conform to the amounts set by the Ontario Ministry of Health (as outlined in PAIRO-CAHO Agreement)

You receive a stipend from the Graduate department you are enrolled in - see your individual department for details.

We will provide supplemental funding above this stipend level in order to ensure that you receive a salary appropriate to your level of training.

You are expected to apply for postgraduate research fellowship awards from external, peer-reviewed grant funding agencies. 

For research training beyond two years (for the purpose of completing a PhD)

If you obtain a postgraduate research fellowship from an external, peer-reviewed grant-funding agency (e.g. CIHR, NCIC), you will continue to receive full funding as outlined above.

If you do not obtain a postgraduate research fellowship from an external, peer-reviewed grant-funding agency you will receive salary funding only.
