Group seminars

You will be allocated to one of the groups, based on either:

  • your stated preferences or
  • the preference of your supervisors.

The groups are based on general themes.

We will have 11 weeks of seminars in the Fall Term and 15 weeks of seminars in the Winter/Spring Term (26 weeks total).

Attendance requirements

You must attend a total of 13 weeks of these student seminars throughout the year. Seven of those weeks must be from within your own allocated group. In-person attendance is mandatory.

You must attend 50% of our Faculty Seminars (also known as the Monday Seminar series). You are required to attend 50% during the Fall Term and 50% during the Winter/Spring Term. In-person attendance is mandatory.

The Monday/Faculty seminars take place on Mondays 4 - 5 pm in MSB 2170 during term time. Details are sent by email in the LMP events bulletin every Friday and are available in the LMP events calendar.

To register your attendance: you must ensure you sign the attendance sheet provided by the TA (Zoya Tawhidi) at the beginning each seminar.

We welcome suggestions for invited speakers. To suggest a speaker for the Faculty Seminar, please contact the organising committee.

You may attend any additional seminars of interest.

  • MSc students must attend in their first two years of study
  • PhD U (direct entry) students must attend in their first four years of study
  • PhD students must attend in their first two years of study.
Group Weeks of seminars over the year
Group 1: Brain and Neuroscience 12 weeks
Group 2: Cancer, Development and Aging 13 weeks
Group 3: Cardiovascular, Physiology and Metabolism/ Group 5: Molecular and Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine 16 weeks
Group 4: Infectious Diseases, Inflammation and Immunology 9 weeks

Format of the group seminars

This is a pass/fail course.

Each week, two of the groups will hold seminars at the same time in different rooms. Typically, two students in each group will present in each session.

Each presenting student is expected to give:

  • Maximum 20 minute presentation
  • 5 minute Q&A

Each seminar will be moderated by a faculty member who will provide feedback/evaluation at the end of each session.

It is expected that your PIs/supervisors will also be present when you are presenting. Other faculty are, of course, strongly encouraged to attend regularly.

How to submit your abstract

You must submit the title and abstract (~250 words) for your seminar by Monday at 10 am the week before your presentation using our online form.
