The Application of Next Generation Sequencing in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases: Paediatric Grand Rounds

Hosted by the Hospital for Sick Children.

The 23rd Annual DPLM Symposium and 17th Laurence Becker Symposium: “Advances in Paediatric Laboratory Medicine”

Metagenomic Sequencing for Diagnosis of Infections: Sars-Cov-2 as a priority case

By attending this event, you will learn about:

  • the applications of clinical metagenomic next-generation sequencing for diagnosing occult infections
  • RNA host response profiling as a complementary approach to infectious disease diagnosis
  • how these technologies can be applied to addressing the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Speaker: Charles Chiu, M.D./Ph.D

Professor, Laboratory Medicine and Medicine/Infectious Diseases
Director, UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center
Associate Director, UCSF Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, USCF School Medicine

Dr. Charles Chiu, M.D. Ph.D. is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at University of California, San Francisco, Director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center (VDDC), and Associate Director of the UCSF Clinical Microbiology Laboratory.

Dr. Chiu currently leads a translational research laboratory focused on next-generation sequencing assay development for infectious disease diagnostics and investigation of emerging pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease), enterovirus D68 in acute flaccid myelitis, Zika virus, and, most recently, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Dr. Chiu is also developing new technologies such as nanopore sequencing and RNA-Seq transcriptome profiling to develop predictive models using machine learning for diagnosis of infections based on a patient's host response. Dr. Chiu’s work is also supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Abbott Laboratories, Department of Defense, philanthropic grants (Charles and Helen Schwab and Steven and Alexandra Cohen Foundations), and the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine. Dr. Chiu has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications (10 on COVID-19), holds over 15 patents and patent applications, and serves on the scientific advisory board for Mammoth Biosciences, Inc.
