Promotions 2023: Q&A with Daniel Beriault
This year, we celebrate 8 promotions in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.
We speak to each of them to learn more about their role and what this promotion means to them.
Dr. Daniel Beriault has been promoted to Associate Professor.
What is your role in LMP?
I am a core faculty member of the LMP Clinical Chemistry training program and selection committee, as well as the site-lead for our UofT fellows training at Unity Health Toronto.
I am the Head of Biochemistry at Unity Health Toronto, and currently the past-chair of the American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) Upstate New York local section. I am also a member of the Nominations Committee for the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemists (CACB).
Why did you pursue an academic career?
I grew up with a dad and brother with type 1 diabetes. From a young age research and academics was always my plan. It was the reason I pursed a PhD in diabetes research and why I have such an interest in endocrinology testing in my current position.
Since joining the LMP faculty, I’ve realized my love for being innovative and creative in solving clinical problems, and truly enjoy my academic position.
What does this promotion mean to you?
It is an incredible honour that recognizes my accomplishments at the national level.
If you can go back, what advice would you give your younger self?
Stop doubting yourself. Also, try to get more sleep.
What advice would you give faculty who would like to apply for promotion?
Get involved with colleagues on projects, committees, and be open minded. It will lead to more opportunities and greater accomplishments.
It is important to work on your paperwork as you go, update your CV, and save invitations as evidence of your stature/recognition in the field.
How did you manage your time in putting your dossier together considering your multiple priorities?
I have no idea. I definitely worked a lot after the kids went to bed and weekends. I probably don’t have great advice here – other than multi-tasking NHL hockey games on TV while writing my dossier did make it a little easier.
