Andrew Evans receives College of American Pathologists (CAP) lifetime achievement award
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has presented Andrew Evans, Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, with the 2021 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award.
He received the award in "recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of digital pathology, particularly whole slide imaging, and for providing artificial intelligence tools to CAP members through the development of quality assessment tools and guidelines".
On receiving the award, Evans commented, "I have had the pleasure and privilege of serving on various CAP committees since 2010, with my primary focus being digital pathology for patient care and the development of best practice guidelines for implementing this technology. I was recently appointed to the newly formed CAP Artificial Intelligence (AI) Committee, whose mandate is to prepare pathologists and laboratories for the incorporation of these tools into clinical practice and to liaise with regulatory agencies concerning validation protocols and quality management. I am very much looking forward to the work that lies ahead in this exciting area".
Evans joined LMP in 2001 as a genitourinary pathologist at University Health Network and was involved in translational research in urological oncology and the implementation of digital pathology for niche applications in patient care.
In 2020 he became Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Mackenzie Health. Mackenzie Health made a strategic investment in pathology, allowing the department to become fully digital. This appealed to Evans who wanted to build on his work in this field, particularly concerning the evaluation and safe implementation of AI into clinical practice.
Evans is working with LMP colleagues at other hospitals to establish a digital pathology network to enhance subspecialty consultation and quality assurance. "I hope to host senior LMP pathology residents for electives in Toronto’s only fully digital pathology department in 2022, providing them with exposure to this technology as applied for routine diagnostics", he adds.
