Clinical trainees prioritise their wellness

In June, postgraduate trainees in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine spent a day focusing on their own wellness.

A strategic priority of the department, trainees in the residency, clinical chemistry and clinical microbiology programs were encouraged to attend the mandatory wellness day.

Paula Nixon, Postgraduate Education Officer, commented, “It sounds a bit odd to make a wellness day mandatory, as one person’s idea of wellness is not necessarily another’s, but it was important to do this. Our trainees work so hard, and it is vital that they take some time to think about their wellness and take a break.”

Organised by a committee with representatives from all the programs involved, they planned the day with logistical support from Paula and funding from the department.

The day started with a continental breakfast (with plenty of fruit) and then they launched into a speed dating ice breaker.

The group then completed a scavenger hunt in Yorkville that had them split into teams and competing against each other across that area of the city.

After a break for lunch, they took part in a fun, competitive quiz which included questions like guessing whose dog it was, to some quirky and interesting science and medical questions.

They celebrated those graduating this year, with program directors handing out certificates to those who had completed their programs.

“Everyone seemed to really enjoy it, they particularly enjoyed the scavenger hunt – that was popular! Most of all, I think everyone enjoyed getting out of their rooms at the hospital and spending time together that wasn’t strictly work,” commented Paula. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we plan for next year!”
