Research: Human development, aging & regenerative medicine
Dr. Rita Kandel

From Trevor Young, MD PhD FRCPC, Dean, Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

I am pleased to announce that the Agenda Committee of the Academic Board has approved the reappointment of Professor Rita Kandel as Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology for a second five-year term beginning May 1, 2022.

The recent external review of the department recognized its continuing success under Dr. Kandel’s leadership and vision, and I’m delighted that she will continue as Chair.  Among her many first-term accomplishments are the launch of the Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Research and Medicine (T-CAIREM), the development of a professional graduate program in Laboratory Medicine, and the initiation, together with Computer Science, of the Computational Medicine and Biology program.

In addition to her role as Professor and Chair in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology, Dr. Kandel also serves as Chief of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Sinai Health, Department Head, Laboratory Medicine at Women’s College Hospital, and Clinician Scientist in the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Sinai Health. Professor Kandel is also a core member of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and cross-appointed to the Departments of Surgery and Materials Science & Engineering.

Professor Kandel’s research interest is in the bioengineering of tissues for articular cartilage and intervertebral disc repair and replacement. Her laboratory is part of a multidisciplinary group of investigators who work together to develop novel treatments for cartilage and disc diseases. Her work is currently funded by CIHR and NSERC.  She is the recipient of the Marshall Urist Award of the Orthopaedic Research Society and is a Fellow of the Orthopaedic Research Society, International Orthopaedic Research Society and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and an Honorary Member of the International Cartilage Repair Society.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Kandel on her accomplishments and wishing her every success in her second term as Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology.

Sincerely,
Trevor Young, MD PhD FRCPC
