We are delighted to announce that Dr. Gino Somers has been elected President of the International Paediatric Pathology Association (IPPA). As Co-Vice Chair, Wellness, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (WIDE) in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, he hopes his new global role will help him highlight the importance of looking after our people.
The IPPA, founded in 1976, plays an important role in bringing together a global network of groups and individuals interested in pediatric pathology. Working closely with the International Academy of Pathologists (IAP), which offers training opportunities globally, they provide an essential forum for knowledge exchange and learning.
Somers is a Professor in LMP and an internationally renowned leader in paediatric pathology and cutting-edge molecular diagnostics for pediatric cancer. He is Chief of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine and the Physician Lead for Wellness at the Hospital for Sick Children.
One of Somers’ key roles as President over the next two years will be to help organize the IAP 2026 conference in Fukuoka, Japan. He’ll also be travelling globally to support the teaching and knowledge exchange championed by the association.
“It's a very exciting role,” he commented. “I’m looking forward to travelling to places like the UK, Turkey and Japan to talk about outreach and education opportunities, and how best to recruit and train the next generation of pediatric pathologists. It is such a fantastic opportunity to work with pediatric pathology groups all over the world and to visit places I wouldn't normally get to see. It will allow me to assess needs at a global level, and how SickKids and LMP can help fill gaps. I'll also be using it as an opportunity to talk about wellness and the importance of looking after our staff in pathology, because people are our most important asset.”
