LMP Postgraduate highlights from the 2024 USCAP annual meeting
The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) annual meeting is one of the largest gatherings of pathologists in the world.
It is a time for networking, meeting old and new friends, and transferring knowledge amongst those in the field.
For residents and fellows in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, it is an essential conference to attend to make connections and showcase the research they are conducting during their training.
Dr. Trevor Teich, a PGY3 Resident in Diagnostic & Molecular Pathology, commented, “One of the benefits of attending USCAP is the opportunity to meet others in the field and compare ideas and discuss challenges. Frequently it is difficult to triage Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) specimens suspected of lymphoproliferative disorders and whether to perform flow cytometry. At USCAP, I discussed these issues with numerous hematopathologists and discovered that many other institutions also experience difficulties like this. Attending USCAP and other conferences helps with knowledge sharing and makes you feel like a part of the international pathology community.”
Community and connection is an important part of the experience as Dr. Alexandra Zyla, PGY2 Resident in Diagnostic & Molecular Pathology, added, “It was great to be able to talk one-on-one with attendees interested in my poster who practiced pathology in different settings around the world. We put significant time and effort into preparing our posters and talks and seeing other people get excited about work we've poured our hearts into makes it feel very worthwhile. It was also a rare opportunity to present side-by-side with my husband who is a gynecologic pathology fellow at UHN which was fun!”
