Speaker: Gino Somers, MBBS, BMedSci, PhD, FRCPA
Dr. Somers is the Chief of the Department of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Professor and Vice-Chair (Wellness) at the University of Toronto. His research has included independent grant-funded projects and numerous collaborative projects focusing on the biology and pathology of pediatric cancer. His recent work has focused on implementing cutting-edge molecular diagnostics for pediatric tumors. Dr. Somers has over 130 publications and has delivered over 50 invited talks, and his work has won numerous international awards.
Recognizing the need to better support colleagues in the medical field, Dr. Somers joined the peer support and trauma response team in 2018 and became Physician Wellness Officer in 2020. He is committed to promoting wellness throughout the hospital and is actively pursuing solutions to prevent burnout and enhance the wellbeing of healthcare workers by a combination of measurement, targeted solutions and advocacy.
Dr. Somers has many years’ experience in medical leadership and is the current President of the International Paediatric Pathology Association. He has received both the Medical Staff Association’s Citizenship Award and the President’s Award from the Hospital for Sick ChildrenYoung Investigator Award, Amerrcan Heart Association, Cooper and Zak Awards from AACC. She is also the recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health.
